Tucson mother arrested for child abuse

1/21/12 Tucson mother arrested for child abuse Detectives from the Tucson Police Department arrested 23-year old Ashley Kammerer, on January 12, 2012, after they presented their completed investigation to the Pima County Grand Jury, on one count of class two felony Child Abuse. According to the police statement, in late September, 2011, the Tucson Police Department’s Dependent Child Unit began an investigation that originated with a complaint from staff at a local hospital. Hospital staff reported that the victim, a then 22-month old boy, was brought into the hospital weighing only 14 ½ pounds. Despite contributing medical conditions, hospital staff were convinced that the boy’s low weight could only result from not being provided sufficient nourishment. Detectives began their investigation and determined that the victim lived with his mother, Kammerer, who was his primary caregiver. The victim suffered from medical conditions that required special feeding, and Kammerer was not providing the necessary care. The victim was placed in temporary custody with Child Protective Services, and has nearly doubled in weight in the past four months. Kammerer was booked into the Pima County Jail.
