TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Pima County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man, after they say he abused an eight-month old boy.

Deputy Tom Peine tells Tucson News Now, Jeremy Millis, 28 is now charged with one Attempted First Degree Murder and one count of Physical Child Abuse.

Peine says on Friday morning, detectives with the Sheriff's Crimes Against Children Unit were called to a local hospital about a possible child abuse incident. Investigators learned that the boy's mother had brought her son to the hospital after she noticed that he was unresponsive.

Doctors say the boy was in critical condition and was not breathing on his own.

Peine says the mother told investigators that she had left her son in the care of Millis, her former boyfriend, while she went to work. Detectives say evidence showed that the child had been choked several times.

Peine says the infant remains in critical condition.

Millis is being held at the Pima County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
