Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles has fired nearly a dozen lawyers.

The Arizona Republic said a human-resources official notified the terminated employees by telephone late Monday afternoon.

Among those who confirmed their firing was Paul Ahler, who headed Voyles' transition team.

The Republic said Ahler gave Voyles his first prosecuting job in 2003 when Ahler was chief deputy at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Also fired was trial attorney Sylvia Lafferty, who was weeks shy of 20 years as a county prosecutor.

The Republic said Lafferty was one of three lawyers in the previous administration qualified to prosecute a capital case. A second attorney who could work those cases - chief deputy Richard Platt - retired in December.

Voyles defeated then-County Attorney James Walsh in November.

What ever happened with this investigation? There were reports that the majority of these firings were due to hiding the internal theft by an employee. Apparently this employee worked for the diversion program and their managers failed to correct the theft. Hasn't this previous employee been prosecuted? What's with the giant cover up?
