Arizona court to rule on child placement cases

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Supreme Court rules Monday on how much authority that state child-welfare officials have in deciding how and when to return children in state custody to their parents.

The Pima County case involves five children taken into state custody on grounds that the parents were using drugs and that the children were being neglected.

A judge ruled that the plans were in complete or full compliance with state officials' plans to reunite the family. However, the children's appointed lawyer objected to giving state officials discretion to gradually transition the children to their parents' home.

The children's lawyer contended that formal court proceedings are needed to return the children, but the judge ruled the child-welfare officials have discretion for transition and placement of the children with their parents.
